Well. Again, I have neglected the blog. Oh well. It’s been a busy time here at Toasterface Towers… Week 12 was a busy (and also terrible) one – project week building a car park booking system. Planning was poor and the project barely got off the ground. Our least successful sprint of them all. Sadface. Week 13 was a great week – we spent three days being taught ZF2/3 by Rob Allen – contributor to Zend Frameworks as well as Slim. It was great to spend time with Rob and learn from him. Week 14 was a project week for ZF2 and we built a form […]

Weeks Gone By…
So, weeks four and five are long gone. Last week was WEEK ELEVEN!! Seems I’ve (just slightly) let my blog slip. Whoops…. Since the Fencelator, a lot has happened – week 6 was MySql and databases followed by a DB project in week 7. Week 8 was basic Javascript and Jquery. Week 9 was (EVENTFUL!!) a project week for the JS module. We had to build a Christmas Game for the Academy website – as a group. It involved (gulp…) Githubbing (do I push, or pull? Not sure. What branch is this?). A proper sprint. A proper team. We made it, just about. The game […]
Week Four
Basic PHP…… That was a tough one! The pace really ramped up. And it was TOUGH! There was a lot covered in the five days – starting with procedural, then functional and by Friday, we crammed in a day of OOP. Well, that, and a lot of crying over polymorphism. Because cheese and milk can both definitely, and OBVIOUSLY, potato… It took all weekend, but in the end, I got it. But that was just the dry old icing on a not very nice cake…. Luckily, it seems to have clicked now, and I think I know what I am on about. It’s project week […]
Week Three
That’s another week done (in fact, this is a bit late – it’s Monday tomorrow already and the real fun begins…). This week was a bit of a mixed bag – because of the bank holiday week and scrum training the previous week, all of Monday and Tuesday morning were continuation of Project week – finishing off our website projects. We did the projects as a sprint with six stories (build six websites). I finished mine, but wasn’t really very happy with the design (definitely not my strong point!). I made some late changes – fonts, colours etc. and it doesn’t look too bad. Although, I […]
Week two
That is another week over and done with. Two down, fourteen to go…. This week was a bit easier than last week. We started off with a two day course on Scrum and Agile ways of working. We knew an external trainer was coming in, but we didn’t know we would be Certified Scrum Masters at the end of it! Nor did we know we would get to play with Lego…. We split into three srcum teams and were tasked to build an airport terminal each over two 15 minute sprints. Ours was an airport terminal for clowns and circus performers: After the first sprint, […]
Yes, but no…..
First week. DONE!! This is me: For the next 15 more weeks, anyway. (Well, I’ve done a bit of tidying and rearranging since this picture). Considering this is week one, there’s been no relief. We’ve covered the basics of HTML, CSS, how the Internet works, coding standards, responsive design and A LOT more! I feel pretty lucky, because I’ve covered a lot of this over the past year. Granted, it’s nowhere near the same as being taught by somebody who knows what they are doing! This means it has been a slightly easier introduction than the other guys have probably had. It’s still been very […]
Day one
So, today was the first day. Well, not quite. It was the first half day – induction, collection of laptops, paperwork and installing software ready to start next Tuesday. This is us (minus one – Alistair was indicted last week as he is away this week). Above is (l – r): Ralph, Aimée, Luke and Jess.
Slight update
As mentioned last time, probably not much will change until start date, but I got an email to say induction half day will be 22nd August. Hopefully, I will be able to get some pictures of the place and everybody else joining me, ready to start on the 30th. Time is getting close. Only 14 days of work left! More soon.
Here goes…
Well, after all this time, I was told today that I had been invited to join the Mayden Academy to train as a software developer. It will be a long four month stint of hard work, but hopefully it will pay off. I intend for this to be a random blog with updates on what is going on, where I am at and what we are doing. Definitely not a daily diary, but just a bit of a memoire. Tomorrow will be the day I hand in my notice to leave work. There won’t be many updates here between now and the 30th August when we start. […]
